What to Do Before & After the Wedding: Local Adventures

Olá, Amigos!

We heard your questions about what to do while you're in Brazil, so we're changing things up. Before we share Brazilian culture and wedding traditions in the next issue, this edition is all about where to go, what to see, and how to make the most of your time in one of the most stunning and diverse countries on Earth.

But first, a quick recap from our last newsletter:

📌 Travel to Brazil Recap

  • When to Arrive in Curitiba
To ensure you’re rested and ready for the festivities, we recommend arriving in Curitiba on the morning of November 19 (if you're already in Brazil) or no later than the evening of November 18 (if you're flying from the U.S.).

  • Flight Booking Tips
Use Google Flights or Hopper to track fares. Your final destination is Curitiba, PR (CWB). Consider putting your entire travel itinerary on one ticket; this allows airlines accommodate for any delays between connecting flights. If you decide to fly into São Paulo (GRU) or Rio (GIG) for better international options, then don’t forget to book a quick domestic flight to Curitiba (CWB). Open-jaw tickets—arriving in one city and departing from another—can help you maximize your travel experience. Additionally, we recommend entering Brazil from the US; traveling to another country before entering Brazil (e.g., US → Columbia → Brazil) could add a layer of complexity for novice South American travelers.

  • Passport & Visa

    • Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. This mean, if your passport expires on May 20, 2026, you need to renew your passport ASAP!

    • Since April 10, 2025, U.S. citizens need to apply for a Brazil eVisa. This is a simple online process and you’ll need to book a flight before applying. We’ve gone through this process and the visa was approved in 1 week.

    • When entering the country, you’ll need to clear immigration and customs. Your entire group can stay together during this process and there is no need to separate, unless a Federal Law Enforcement Officer tells you otherwise.

  • FAQ Corner (More coming!)

    • I see much cheaper flights if I book a ticket to São Paulo (GRU) or Rio (GIG) from the US; should I do this?

      • If you are delayed and miss your Brazilian domestic connection, you will need to purchase another flight. Therefore, we strongly recommend you put your entire flight (final destination CWB), on a single ticket.

    • Do I need travel insurance? Is it worth it?

      • Travel insurance protects your nonrefundable trip costs, your luggage or your health. Please read this article for an explanation of Travel Insurance and its coverages. If you’re older than 30ish and are traveling with family, we believe travel insurance is worth it. Some credit cards offer travel insurance as a card holder benefit; check with your provider to see if this is included.

    • Do I need to rent a car?

      • Not really… Uber’s are so VERY affordable (think hour long rides for $15) and rental cars are going to be small. If you’re visiting major cities, public transit and Uber’s are your go-to. Just upgrade your ride to Uber Comfort or Black.

    • How do I book my flight?

      • Avoid third party travel websites that advertise drastically cheaper prices. Book directly with the airline.

🌍 Where to Travel: City Highlights

🟢 Curitiba (2–3 Days)

The hometown of the bride and the heart of our celebrations.

Why Visit:
Curitiba is a city you won’t find on every Brazil travel blog, but that’s part of what makes it special. As Manuella’s hometown, it’s where we’ll tie the knot and the majority of our Brazilian family grew up here. Known as one of the most innovative and sustainable cities in Latin America, Curitiba blends thoughtful urban planning, cozy European architecture, and a peaceful pace that makes it ideal for exploring before or after the wedding.

Located on a plateau in southern Brazil, near the Serra do Mar mountain range, Curitiba is set apart from many of Brazil’s other major cities by its geography. It’s far from the beaches and sits at a higher elevation, which gives it a mild, spring-like climate year-round. Expect cool mornings, pleasant afternoons, and light layers in the evenings with the occasional, yet sporadic, rain shower.

Top Things to Do:

  • Botanical Garden: A French-style garden topped with a glass greenhouse, inspired by London’s Crystal Palace.

  • Oscar Niemeyer Museum: Brazil’s famous “Eye Museum” is as iconic outside as it is fascinating inside.

  • Barigui Park: Want to see capybaras in their natural habitat? Here is where you’ll find them. Take a short drive the Barigui where you can stroll, run, or bike in this popular local greenery.

  • Wire Opera House: An open-air theater tucked into the woods—one of the city’s most photographed places.

  • Serra Verde Express Train: One of the world’s most scenic train rides where you can travel through the lush Atlantic Forest to the historic beach town of Morretes.

Where to Stay:

  • Qoya Hotel Curitiba, Curio Collection by Hilton: This is the preferred hotel for our wedding guest and only a 5 minute drive to/from the venue. Please contact the hotel via email at [email protected] to make a reservation for the “Casamento Manuella Andrade” and you will have access to your promotional rate.

    Single: R$760,00 + 15% tax (breakfast included)

    Double: R$820,00 + 15% tax (breakfast included)

Use your Hilton app to book for a slightly cheaper rate, but it does NOT include breakfast

Good to Know:
The city has an efficient Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system (a model for cities globally), walkable neighborhoods, and cooler weather thanks to its higher elevation. Think spring jacket, not beachwear!

🌞 Rio de Janeiro (3–4 Days)

The postcard-perfect city you’ve always heard about and for good reason.

Why Visit:
Rio is a vibrant blend of beach culture, jaw-dropping natural beauty, and iconic sights. Picture samba, sunsets over the ocean, and towering granite peaks rising from the sea. When Americans think of Brazil, they’re imagining Rio. It’s Brazil’s most photographed city for good reason, and it’s an ideal destination for first-time visitors.

What to See & Do:

  • Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor): Take the historic Corcovado train or a shuttle van to reach the statue. Best visited early in the day for clear views and fewer crowds.

  • Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar): Ride the cable car for panoramic city and coastline views—go at sunset if you can.

  • Ipanema & Copacabana Beaches: Famous for a reason with its laid-back energy, caipirinhas on the beach, and great people watching. Just be wary of the pesky street vendors… unless they’re selling Mate Leão (seriously, it’s amazing).

  • Santa Teresa & Lapa Steps: Bohemian neighborhoods filled with colorful art, great bars, and history.

  • Confeitaria Colombo: A coffeehouse and bakery located in downtown Rio known for being one of the 10 most beautiful cafes in the world. A true must see and our favorite brunch spot in Rio.

  • Museu de Amanhã: Latin America’s most famous museums, The Museum of Tomorrow is Brazil’s Science Museum built next to the waterfront at Pier Maua.

Where to Stay:

  • Copacabana Palace: Historic and luxurious beachfront icon.

  • Hotel Fasano: Chic and modern with a rooftop pool view that’s hard to beat.

  • Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro: Great boutique option in Botafogo with views of the bay and Christ the Redeemer.

🌿 Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls) (2 Days)

For the nature lovers: get soaked in one of the world’s greatest waterfall experiences.

Why Visit:
If Niagara and Victoria Falls had a rainforest-covered baby, it would be Iguazu. With 275 cascading falls and howler monkeys calling from the trees, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of Brazil’s greatest natural treasures. It was voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Must-Do Experiences:

  • Devil’s Throat (Garganta do Diabo): The largest and most powerful section of the falls.

  • Boat Safari: Get up close and personal—you will get wet.

  • Brazilian vs. Argentine Side: Brazil offers better panoramic views, while Argentina has more walkable trails. If you can, do both!

  • Bird Park (Parque das Aves): Near the entrance and great for families or anyone interested in Brazil’s colorful fauna.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel das Cataratas: This is the only hotel inside Iguaçu National Park, and staying here gives you exclusive access to the falls before the gates open and after they close to the public—meaning you’ll have quieter, crowd-free moments. It’s a Belmond property with classic colonial architecture, lush gardens, and a pool with views of the rainforest. A truly special experience.

🌆 São Paulo (1–2 Days)

Brazil’s cosmopolitan giant: part NYC, part Tokyo, part Latin spirit.

Why Visit:
São Paulo isn’t known for beaches or waterfalls, but for those who love big cities, bold flavors, and contemporary culture, this is for you. With over 22 million people in its metro area, it's a mega city with world-class art, lush parks, and a global culinary scene that rivals any capital on Earth.

Highlights:

  • Avenida Paulista: A skyscraper-lined avenue home to art museums, bookstores, and coffee shops.

  • Ibirapuera Park: São Paulo’s answer to Central Park—sprawling, green, and full of modernist architecture.

  • MASP & Pinacoteca Museums: See both Brazilian masters and international exhibits.

  • Vila Madalena: Street art, galleries, and bars—it’s hip, fun, and colorful.

  • Mercadão Market: Don’t leave without trying a mortadella sandwich or pastel.

  • A Figueira Rubaiyat: One of our favorite restaurants in the world. Set under the canopy of a 100-year-old fig tree, this iconic dining spot is equal parts elegant and unforgettable.

Where to Stay:

  • Hotel Emiliano (Jardins): Luxurious, sleek, and well-located.

  • Qoya Curio by Hilton: Business-friendly and upscale.

  • L’Hotel PortoBay: Elegant and walkable to major sites.
